The Foreign language department offers the following sequence, depending on placement tests given to incoming students.

Foreign Language Objectives:
1. To understand the target language when spoken at normal speed on a subject within the range of the student's experience.
2. To speak well enough to communicate with a native speaker on a subject within the range of the student's experience.
3. To master the fundamental vocabulary and common idiomatic expressions of the language.
4. To learn the basic grammatical structures of the language.
5. To write, using authentic patterns of the language.
6. To read without recourse to English translation.
7. To acquire knowledge of the countries where the target language is spoken and to develop an understanding of the cultural heritage of the people.
8. To develop an appreciation of linguistic, cultural, and racial pluralism.
9. To become aware of the value of a foreign language in the practical world of academics, business, and politics.
10. To become aware of global interdependence.
