BMHS announces three Daniels Fund Scholars
Bishop Machebeuf High School is proud to announce that three of our graduating seniors have been awarded the Daniels Fund Scholarship. In a four state region of Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and Arizona, 263 scholarships were awarded, 181 to Colorado students. Congratulations to Angel Ibarra (middle), Sara Sahlezghi (right) and Alex Sigala (left), it is a tremendous honor to have them represent the Bishop Machebeuf community as Daniels Scholars.
Angel Ibarra will attend Catholic University of America, Sara Sahlezghi will attend Franciscan University of Steubenville and Alejandro Sigala will attend the University of Notre Dame. The Daniels Fund scholarship is an integral part in making these goals happen.
To be eligible for the award, students must first be nominated by a youth-serving organization. In the four-state region, over 2,000 students were nominated. After being nominated the students take part in a rigorous application and interview process. The Daniels Fund is looking for students who demonstrate strong character, a well-rounded personality and a record of giving back to the community.
The Daniels Fund scholarship is not a full ride, but is supplemental to all other financing options, including scholarships, grants and other aid available to the student. Once that aid is applied the Daniels Fund covers all tuition, fees, room and board, books and supplies. Recipients of the scholarship also receive a laptop computer and printer.

This years Prom King & Queen were seniors, John Gates and Aubrey Schlanger. The students then headed back to Machebeuf for "After-Prom." Into the late hours, students enjoyed inflatable games, air hockey, karaoke, and of course, Guitar Hero. A special thanks to Kathy Murzyn and the After-Prom Committee, chaperones, and the students who attend the festivities. Your spirit made the night one to remember.
Spring Break Mission Trip
A young mother of two small children with her life destroyed by the devastating destruction of a late season hurricane. An elderly woman unable to take care of her yard especially after the chaos of Ike. A middle-aged couple, rebuilding a home that they had only recently finished remodeling.
A Call to Mission
“Come, be my light” was God’s call to Mother Teresa more than 50 years ago. Seventeen students and four adults from Bishop Machebeuf High School in Denver felt the same call--to help those in need in Galveston, Texas. The island off of the southwestern coast of the state was devastated by Hurricane Ike in mid-September 2008, causing massive destruction, unseen in this historic city since 20,000 died in 1900. Ora et Labora
The mission included both work and prayer; students prayed the Liturgy of the Hours and went to Mass together each day. Machebeuf faculty and students spent around 7 hours a day working on various sites. They moved from house to house through the week cleaning, removing trees and debris, rebuilding, restoring, and painting.
Finding fulfillment in service
Br. Paul Kostka, Machebeuf teacher and head of campus ministry, noted, “My favorite time of the trip was being able to assist a young mother whose house had to be rebuilt from the ground up.” Alex Gomez, a senior who traveled with the school previously to do mission work in Peru, said of the people who were helped, “It was amazing that these people, who have suffered for so long and have lost so much, remain joyous, hospitable, and hopeful.” The group was lodged through the generosity of the Knights of Columbus and hosted by St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

BMHS students attend National March for Life
“And so, America: If you want peace, work for justice. If you want justice, defend life. If you want life, embrace the truth, the truth revealed by God.” - Pope John Paul II, 1999 visit to St. Louis
Twenty students and Faculty from Bishop Machebeuf traveled to Washington, D.C. for the annual National March for Life to fulfill the call of Pope John Paul II. The trip was inspired by the work and dedication of the Women of Machebeuf who have been witnessing to the dignity of the unborn in Denver throughout this school year.
Br. Paul Kostka, the Campus Minister, noted the March for Life was a pilgrimage for Life, not just a trip. It’s a call to prayer and Christian witness for life.
Students and faculty were able to attend the National Mass for Life at the Verizon center with hundreds of priests and more the 20 Bishops from around the United States. Students also were able to visit the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception while they were in our nation’s capital.
